A Storytelling and Active Listening Workshop

LGBTQ+ WAE Coordinator/Facilitator
Micaela Camacho-Tenreiro (they/she) is a Venezuelan-American poet, dancer, and performance artist. Their work has been published in American Poetry Review, ONLY POEMS, and elsewhere; broadcast on National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition Saturday; and featured by Brooklyn Poets, the Center for Brooklyn History, and the Feminist Bird Club of Jersey City. She received a 2025 Individual Artist Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and has been awarded fellowships and residencies from Sundress Academy for the Arts, the Poetic License Project, and CantoMundo.

Just as painters use watercolors and canvas to make art and musicians use instruments and breath to play songs, people turn to stories to connect with each other. In this workshop, participants will practice both sharing and hearing stories in ways that deepen vulnerability, trust, and wonder. By reading poems, listening to oral histories, and writing self-reflections, participants will learn how to weave specific details and imagery into their stories, as well as how to ask curious questions and engage in active listening when others share stories of their own.
