October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

By Lisette Rotman / September 28, 2026

Lisette Rotman has been working with artist Kristen Iannuzzelli for over ten years, in creating a professional art practice. Lisette interviewed Kristen about her thoughts about her work and its impact on her life.

Tell me about where you work and what you do?
Art runs through my blood. I come from a generation of artists, and it’s passed down to the next generation. I mainly work on portraits – humans and animals – as well as landscapes. I sell my artwork and it’s also sold on various products in the WAE Center gift shop. I submit and exhibit my work. Several years ago, I was commissioned to make a logo for a yoga business. I had a one woman show in March 2018 at a gallery in Montclair called Creativity Caravan where I sold my work. In 2025, my drawing, “Love Unconditionally,” was selected for inclusion in PFLAG Rockland’s fundraising coloring book, “Love Unites Us.”

What part of your work are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my cat art. My late cat, Max, is an inspiration to my cat art. I was excited and surprised by the first show I got accepted into called Art Connections, especially because I wasn’t even done with that piece yet! Not only do I purchase products with my artwork but also from my colleagues. I love supporting my fellow artists. In every community, we’ve got to lift each other up.

When do you feel most supported and included at work?
I am most supported at the WAE Center, which is where I make my art.

What is new to you that you have learned to do at your job?
I have been learning set and prop design. I also have learned multiple uses for my artwork and the freedom to express myself through art.

What is something you wish for more people to understand about disability in the workplace?
Lift each other up! People with disabilities can do the same things as people without disabilities.

Who or what has made a positive difference in your career journey?
Everyone I’m around. I’m surrounded by friendly faces and very warm personalities.
