Valentine’s Day Themed Poetry Class
BY MARCIA LEBEAU / FEBRUARY 20, 2026
There isn’t a better week of the year to write odes than the week of Valentine’s Day. An ode is a poem in praise of someone or something. A poet writes an ode when they are so moved by something they must write about it. Therefore, as a group, we began by writing down things we loved—from broccoli and potato chips to baseball and Brian Adams’ music. Then we read the Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda’s Ode to Common Things. Some of the favorites were his “Ode to Scissors” and “Ode to an Apple.” After all that inspiration, it was time to craft poems on cut-out hearts. A few of the poets’ poems were Kevin C’s “Ode to a Concert” and Alicia’s “Ode to My Alexa,” which excited the Life | Home | Tech team when they heard about it. All the poets left smiling, which is what happens when you’re thinking and writing about what you love.
Ode to My Alexa
by Alicia
I love talking to her
and saying meow to my cat Bootsie.
My imaginary cat. I love Ode to Joy
by Beethoven 9th Symphony. I listen
to The Organ Symphony CD at my mom’s
house. I talk to Alexa and don’t want to be mean
to her. “Be quiet, Alexa,” I say. “You big meanie.”
I put you somewhere else. She says, “Stop!”
back to me. “Alexa, play rock music for me.”
I listen to the music. I love the music.
