Community, creativity, and connection were at the heart of a special Shabbat evening as Oheb Shalom Congregation hosted its monthly Happy Holy Hour on Friday night at JSDD’s Heidi Gallery. Surrounded by the inspiring Creativity Abound exhibit, which showcases the artwork of JSDD’s staff, congregants, JSDD Residents and guests gathered to celebrate Shabbat in a warm and welcoming environment.
The event was the vision of JSDD board members Mimi Sochor and Ellen Weinstock, longtime congregants of Oheb Shalom who recognized the opportunity to bring people together in a meaningful way. Their idea transformed an ordinary Friday evening into an experience that highlighted the power of inclusion and community engagement.
Before the service began, attendees enjoyed snacks and conversation while taking in the exhibit’s vibrant displays. The gallery setting created a unique backdrop for fellowship, encouraging guests to connect not only with one another but also with the creativity and talent reflected in the artwork on display.
A particularly meaningful aspect of the evening was the participation of JSDD community members, who were warmly welcomed and fully included in the gathering. Their presence enriched the celebration and reflected a shared commitment to creating a community where everyone feels valued and connected. The evening was supported by a sign language interpreter, ensuring that more individuals could meaningfully participate in the service and experience the sense of belonging that Shabbat offers.
As guests shared conversation, celebrated Shabbat, and appreciated the artwork around them, the message of the evening was clear: meaningful community grows when people come together, and create spaces where everyone belongs a sentiment that was echoed by Ellen and Mimi as well as Rabbi Treu.
Through initiatives like this , Oheb Shalom and JSDD continue to foster connections that extend far beyond a single evening, building a more inclusive and caring community for all.
