Shabbat at JSDD – May 2026

By Rebecca Weinfield / May 22, 2026

Shabbat at JSDD is a time to come together, share experiences, and rejoice with friends, community, and those we care about. Every month, people from every JSDD residence look forward to embracing this special time together, in which they can catch up with one another and unwind from the week’s activities.

This Shabbat was especially symbolic, as the event was held in honor of Lag B’omer, the thirty-third day of the Omer count: a special day between Passover and Shavuot in which a celebration full of joy, takes place. Todd E. counted the Omer on the calendar, all the while, adding one Lego brick to a model for each day of Omer, with the goal of building a model of Mt. Sinai- one brick at a time.

Todd E. then led a beautiful Kiddush and lighting of the candles, followed by Rachel P. reciting the blessing over the challah. Everyone enjoyed a delicious barbeque style meal together, including challah, pita, hummus, potatoes, and Israeli salad!

There was time to mingle, socialize, and enjoy each other’s company, all while discussing what they enjoyed about their busy weeks and sharing stories and experiences. Mark L. expressed how much he loves Shabbat, indicating that his favorite part of the celebration was the “warmth and love, good food, Kiddush, nice friends, and Shabbat spirit!”

Being able to enjoy Shabbat at JSDD is paramount to the ritual of community engagement and connection. Many residents look forward to Shabbat all week and can’t wait to spend this special time with their friends. It was clear at dinner that coming together as a community is both comforting and valuable to all who participate. The tradition of Shabbat lends itself to shared experiences that remain with each person who participates, creating lasting memories and a foundation to friendships that won’t be forgotten.
