Over several weeks, Yoav and JSDD’s Speech Therapist, Shelby Scalici, worked on a project centered around an exciting life event — becoming an uncle.
During their speech therapy sessions, they discussed what kind of uncle Yoav hopes to be and all the things he looks forward to doing with his niece or nephew someday. Yoav was eager to take the baby for walks in a stroller, teach them how to play games, make smoothies, play instruments together, buy them cool sneakers, and read them a book at bedtime.
While reflecting on the role of an uncle, Shelby encouraged Yoav to think about all the reasons the new baby will love him. His responses were simply beautiful. Yoav spoke with confidence about the qualities that make him who he is and the things he does well.
Yoav’s most touching response was, “I have a strong heart.”
As part of the project, Yoav researched baby gifts online, practicing budgeting and decision-making skills. Not only did he choose thoughtful items for the baby, but he also wanted to get his sister a gift. Knowing she enjoys hiking, Yoav selected a purple hat that even had a hole for her ponytail.
He created a framed collage using pictures and words that reflected his thoughts. Yoav independently organized, cut, assembled, and wrapped each gift. The most challenging part appeared to be keeping everything a secret until the baby arrived.
The response from his family was incredibly emotional. Yoav’s parents, sister, and even his sister’s friends were deeply touched by the thoughtfulness and love behind the project. His mother later shared that when Yoav presented the gifts and framed collage, “there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.”
This project became much more than a therapy activity. It provided Yoav with an opportunity to express himself, build confidence in his identity, and celebrate an important new role in his life.
