WAE to Hit the Road!

This month, WAE Center members embraced adventure, creativity, and connection through a series of exciting community outings. From live performances to inspiring art exhibits and hands-on creative exploration, each trip offered unique opportunities for learning, independence, and shared experiences.

A Dynamic Performance at Mayo Performing Arts Center

Members traveled to the Mayo Performing Arts Center to see the Mayhem Poets, a group of theatrically trained and comedically gifted performers who blend hip hop, theater, improv, and poetry into an unforgettable experience. The performance was both entertaining and inspiring—and a clear hit with the group. Members shared that they absolutely loved the show.

Art in Bloom at the Montclair Art Museum

During a visit to the Montclair Art Museum, members explored the Art in Bloom exhibit, a creative collaboration between visual artists and floral designers. Each floral arrangement was designed to reflect and interpret a two-dimensional artwork on display. Members enthusiastically observed connections between the paintings and the floral pieces, identifying shared colors, shapes, and themes. This outing was especially meaningful as a collaboration between the art department and horticultural classes, highlighting the intersection of different creative disciplines.

Creative Exploration at Presby Iris Gardens

A trip to Presby Iris Gardens in Montclair provided members with an opportunity to practice independence while engaging in art and technology. After checking in and reviewing iPad skills such as passcodes, photography, and digital drawing, members explored the gardens at their own pace.

They were encouraged to sketch, paint digitally, or capture photos of the vibrant blooms. Members moved confidently through the space, working independently and in small groups. Some focused on digital painting using styluses, while others explored photography—both on iPads and with a DSLR camera. The group later came together to share their work, exchanging ideas and learning new techniques, including layering in digital art applications. The experience fostered both creativity and skill-building, while encouraging members to try new approaches and expand their artistic abilities.

A Change of Plans Leads to a New Experience at iMuseum

When weather conditions shifted plans away from a zoo visit, the group adapted and headed to the iMuseum instead. The change brought a new and memorable experience, as members explored immersive rooms designed to evoke different emotions. The interactive and sensory-rich environment captured their interest, offering a unique way to engage with art and self-expression.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the dedicated staff, facilitators, and DSPs whose passion, curiosity, and commitment make these experiences possible. Their thoughtful planning, encouragement, and support empower WAE Center members to explore new places, try new skills, and engage with the world in meaningful ways.

Each of these outings reflects the WAE Center’s commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for exploration, creativity, and connection in the community. Whether through performance, visual art, nature, or immersive experiences, members continue to expand their horizons—proving that sometimes the best journeys happen when WAE hits the road.
