Getting to Know… Jasmine Payne

Jasmine hugging a WAE center memberTitle: WAE Center Floor Supervisor

When did you start at JSDD?
I worked for JSDD in 2016 as a DSP in the West Orange Group Home. Then in February 2024 I started working in the WAE Center as a DSP. In September 2024 I was asked to be an interim Floor supervisor and was promoted to floor supervisor in November.

What was your first impression of JSDD?
JSDD was the second group home I worked in. I was nervous and getting used to working with people with developmental disabilities. I was uncertain, not knowing what to expect from the staff and the residents. As time went on, it became comfortable and safe and sweet. I worked with Rachel and Stacy back then who I now work with in the WAE Center.

What has most surprised you about working with JSDD?
In the WAE Center, I was surprised how quickly the day goes by and how different it is from working in the houses. When the members come in, they are ready to get to work, try new things, and be active. It is so different than working in group homes where the residents are tired at the end of the day and want to relax.

What 3 words best describe the WAE Center?
Fantastic, Unique, and Peaceful.

What challenges do you face in your role?
Getting to know the different health conditions of the members and sometimes getting them to go to class (even when it is a class they like).

What do you wish other people knew about JSDD
How amazing the members are and how the staff is very warm. It is joyful here. People are happy to be here. You can come to work after having a bad morning and being here changes your mood (for the better).

When your friends/family find out that you work at the WAE Center, what do they say or ask?
They ask how it is and how it is different from being in a group home… Also, how can they apply!
